Planning

Warp first: weaving side work into a full week

Longer note · updated October 2026

Weavers set the warp before passing any weft. Planning side work works the same way: the fixed parts of the week come first, and side work fits through them.

Set the warp

  • Your working hours and commute
  • Family time and meals you won't give up
  • Enough sleep, and at least one real rest period a week

Pass the first weft

Choose one or two short, specific side-work sessions, for example "Tuesday 20:00 to 21:00, listings". Specific passes are easier to keep than vague intentions.

Check the cloth

After two weeks, look at the warp. Is sleep the same? Has anything slipped at work or home? If the cloth is even, you can add another pass.

Leave loose ends loose

Not every opportunity has to be woven in. Leaving an extra project for later is part of keeping the whole piece sound.
