Checking

Reading the tension before adding work

Longer note · updated October 2026

Adding side work is easy to say yes to. A short check first keeps the week from pulling out of shape.

Four questions

  • Have I slept about as much as usual over the last two weeks?
  • Has anything slipped at my main job?
  • Has anyone at home mentioned that I'm less around?
  • Do I still have one evening a week with no side work?

Reading the answers

Four good answers: there's room for another pass. One or two worrying answers: keep the current load for another month. More than that: ease off.

Ask someone else

People close to you often notice tension before you do. Ask them directly, and take the answer seriously.
